Support-a-Child-in-Need is governed by its Trustees. It is a registered charity, registered in the UK on the Central Register of Charities by the Charities Commission for England and Wales. The registration number for Support-a-Child-in-Need is 1098705.

There are currently five trustees. The trustees are responsible for policy and implementation, with all financial accounts audited annually, with a copy to the Charities Commission. In addition, Support-a-Child-in-Need has professional support in India including legal, financial and medical expertise. The Central Register of Charities lists the objectives of Support-a-Child-in-Need as:

1. The relief of poverty, sickness and distress, by the provision of financial and such other charitable support for children and young people.
2. To advance the education of children and young people by the provision of financial support and other such charitable support as the trustees in their absolute discretion see fit.
3. To provide or assist in the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupation in the interests of social welfare with the object of improving the conditions of life of the said beneficiaries.

The governing document of Support-a-Child-in-Need is the 'Declaration of Trust for a Charitable Trust (GD2 )' , signed by the trustees and witnessed independently. A copy of this document is held by the Charities Commission for England and Wales. This document defines the powers, duties, appointments, conduct of meetings, eligibility for trusteeship, annual reports, etc that control the activities and responsibilities of the trustees. This document also contains the following clause (Clause 25) that defines the financial conduct of the Trustees:

Trustees not to benefit financially from their trusteeship

1. No trustee may buy goods or services from the charity, or sell goods or services to the charity, or receive remuneration, or receive any other financial benefit from the charity, or from any trading company owned by the charity, except in accordance with this deed.
2. Trustees must be satisfied that it is in the best interests of the charity to employ, or contract with, that trustee rather than someone who has no connection with the charity. In reaching that decision, they must balance the advantage of employing the trustee against the disadvantage of not doing so (see sub-clause 3 below). The remuneration or other sums paid to the trustee must not exceed an amount that is reasonable in all the circumstances. The trustees must record the reason for their decision in their Minute Book.
3. A trustee must be absent from that part of any meeting at which his or her employment or remuneration, or any matter concerning the contract, are discussed. He or she must also be absent from that part of any meeting at which his or her performance in the employment, or his or her performance of the contract, is considered. He or she must not vote on any matter relating to the employment or the contract, and must not be counted when calculating whether a quorum of trustees is present at the meeting.
4. This clause applies to a firm of which a trustee is a partner as it applies to a trustee personally.
